Consideration of Others – Fail

Here is something that really gives me the 5H!T5 and it seems all too common.

Some inconsiderate person leaves his car parked across the footpath because they are too lazy to walk another 5m.

No consideration that they have to make people walk in the road.

What about someone who is vision impaired?

Is it my imagination?……….. or is it really true that 90% of the people that are guilty of this trick drive Holden Commodores?

What do your neighbours do that annoys you?

Facade Fail

Here is one facade detail I first saw a few years three ago.

Its one of those ‘WOW’ features that builders like to use to make their house look different.

The walls are built in rendered brickwork to about 200mm below the eaves and then the gap is set back and finished in timber.

So what don’t I like about  it? Well…..

  1. It gives the impression they ran out of bricks and have done a bodge to finish the job.
  2. It going to be really fiddly to paint that woodwork in a few years time.
  3. There is likely to be less insulation which will cause a colder band around the ceiling which could be a site for future condensation, and mould.
  4. And finally….. If you look closely you will see some white streaks below the ledge. That because on wet nights birds perch on the ledge to shelter from the rain and while they are perched they sh!t down the front of the facade.

Kitchen Drawer Fail

Have you ever wondered why kitchens with all the unit along a wall are so popular with builders?. . . . . and island units?

Why are drawers without a large handle common?

Well it stops mistakes like this happening!

I would have thought most kitchen installers would have made this mistake once, but only once!

One thing to think about though if planning a kitchen space with corners is the storage volume in those corners is very hard to access.

Downspout – Fail

An ingenious method of replacing a broken downspout on the cheap.

When they have gone to all the trouble to get a ladder to get to the roof level you would think they would have just spent a few dollars more for a proper piece of pipe.

First decent rain and this won’t have the capacity and will just burst apart.

Thanks to whitetrashrepairs.com for the photo. A great site for LOLs at duct tape repairs and dodgy fixes.

Hydrant Letter Box – Fail

Another one of those houses where I walked up and down the street 2-3 times before I realised the owner had used a hydrant cover as a letter box.

Don’t people want to get any post? . . . . . . .

It seems not if you look at the size of the slot or the door at the back, they are both tiny! . . . .  . . . . definitely a FAIL!

Not sure about the legality either!

See Letter Boxes for the minimum recommended sizes.

Overflow Fail

Lucky it wasn’t raining when I was walking down this Melbourne street !

Not only does this rainwater tank discharge the overflow over the footpath. . . It discharges it at shoulder level.

It’s sad but I don’t have to look hard to see examples of dodgy trade practices as I travel round Melbourne.

Glaring Fail

Here is a new town house development in Melbourne.

Just a couple of ‘small’ problems

  • Those huge master bedroom windows face west so they are going to get the summer sun all day from around 2.00pm until late in the evening.
  • What makes it worst is it has full length mirrored wardrobes on the North Facing Wall

With the glare you will need to be wearing sunglasses just to go into the room. On a hot day it’s going to be around 60 degrees plus!
