Building with Cardboard

Would you build your new house out of cardboard?

Perhaps you think that is impossible!

Well here is a picture of me outside the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The cathedral was built as a temporary replacement for the Old Cathedral which was badly damaged in the 2011 Earthquake.

It might be temporary, but its been opened since 2013 and we were told it should last at least 50 years.

The building has a nice feel inside and the internal photo below shows the cardboard tubes which are the main supporting members.

A lot of the smaller details are also made using cardboard tubes including the main cross.

The walls of the small chapel, lectern, and pulpit also use cardboard tubes.

The building was designed by architect Shigeru Ban and seats around 700 people.

If you are in Christchurch be sure to visit it.

Don’t like the 2 storey house?

Well simply roll it over and have a single storey house!

PrefabNZ is running a competition for the best designed building of less than 65 square metres that can fit in a backyard.

Out of the 86 entries this is one of the 12 finalists.

The public is now being invited to choose their favourite.

Solar Power Fail

I was walking along a street in Chicago and saw these two workmen who seemed to be repairing a solar power panel.

I couldn’t help wondering if the problem was the panel never actually saw any sunlight as it was under fairly heavy shade from a lot of well established tree cover>

Shed On Stilts

This is a photo of me last year on holiday in Vancouver. . . . . but what is that strange shed above me.

Well it is actually a cast aluminium sculpture called the ‘Light Shed’

Apparently it “recalls the simple industrial buildings which were common in the Coal Harbour district 100 years ago.
